Skill 1: Map Use
Element 4: Comparison of Aerial Photography and Photographic Essay 

Materials:

1988 Aerial Photograph with taped overlay
1:24,000 scale USGS Mumper Quadrangle
Photographic Essay
Ultra-fine black pen
Magnifying glass

Exercise:

1. Review the Crescent Lake photographic essay. Note locations of each picture taken and the habitat description for each photo.

2. Using the 1988 Aerial Photograph and the Crescent Lake Photographic Essay, identify habitats by comparing the pictures' locations on the photograph.

3. Use the topographic map at the front of the photographic essay (showing photo locations) and the magnifying glass to identify the following habitats. On photo overlay, mark each of the following habitats with a " + " using the black pen.

Fresh marsh

Forested wetlands

Wetland scrub-shrub

Upland scrub-shrub

Upland forested

Agriculture/Range

Open water

Urban

4. Match a picture from the Photographic essay with each of the habitats. Write the picture number from the photographic essay that corresponds to the habitat type beside each habitat " + " mark . Write the name of the identified habitat near the corresponding " + " and picture number.
