WETMAAP Skill 1
Weedon Island - Element 25

Skill 1: Map Use
Element 25: Use of 2003 Landsat 7 Thematic Mapper Satellite Image

Materials:

2003 Landsat 7 CIR Thematic Mapper (TM) Satellite Images

2003 Landsat 7 NC Thematic Mapper (TM) Satellite Images

2002 Natural Color (N/C) Weedon Island Aerial Photograph

1979 Black and White (B/W) Weedon Island Aerial Photograph

1:24,000 scale Safety Harbor/Gandy Bridge/ Saint Petersburg, FL; Port Tampa, FL USGS Topographic Quadrangle

1:100,000 scale St. Petersburg USGS Topographic Quadrangle

1:250,000 scale St. Petersburg USGS Topographic Quadrangle

(2) 9” x 9” clear film overlays

(2) 8 ½” x 11” clear film overlays

(3) 11” x 17” clear film overlays

Permanent marking pens; ultra fine black pen

magnifying glass; drafting tape

Exercises:

Part I:

1. Tape one of the 11" x 17" clear film overlays on top of each of the one of the Landsat 7 Thematic Mapper images.

2. Use the Black pen to make four marks; one at each corner ticks of the image.

3. Using the 1:100,000 scale USGS Topographic Quadrangle and the Black pen, locate two points at least four inches apart.

Hint: It is best to identify and use cultural features, but if not enough are available, use two natural feature points that do not appear to have changed.

4. Identify the exact same two features from the USGS Topographic Quadrangle on the 2003 Landsat 7 Satellite Image. Make a mark on the image for each location.

5. Measure the distance between the two points on the 1:100,000 scale USGS Topographic Quadrangle with the ruler.

_________________ What is the distance in inches?

6. Measure the distance between the two points on 2003 Landsat 7 Satellite Image the with the ruler.

________________ What is the distance in inches?

7. Using the calculator and "Scale Determination" section of the Reference Manual, determine the scale of the 2003 Landsat 7 Satellite Image.

_________________ What is the scale that you calculated?

Part II:

Lay out in front of you, side-by-side, the 2003 Landsat 7 Thematic Mapper (TM) Satellite Images , the 2002 Natural Color (N/C) Weedon Island Aerial Photographs, the 1979 Black and White (B/W) Weedon Island Aerial Photograph, the 1:24,000 scale Safety Harbor/Gandy Bridge/ Saint Petersburg, FL; Port Tampa, FL USGS Topographic Quadrangle, the1:100,000 scale St. Petersburg USGS Topographic Quadrangle and the 1:250,000 scale St. Petersburg USGS Topographic Quadrangle.

1. Organize the images (in front of you) from smallest scale on the left to largest scale on the right.

Rank from 1-7, with 1 being the largest scale (or image on your farthest left) and 7 being the smallest scale (or farthest image on the right).

___ 2003 Landsat 7 Thematic Mapper (TM) Satellite Images

___ 2002 Natural Color (N/C) Weedon Island Aerial Photographs

___ 1979 Black and White (B/W) Weedon Island Aerial Photograph

___ 1:24,000 scale Safety Harbor/Gandy Bridge/ Saint Petersburg, FL; Port Tampa, FL USGS Topographic Quadrangle

___ 1:100,000 scale St. Petersburg USGS Topographic Quadrangle

___ 1:250,000 scale St. Petersburg USGS Topographic Quadrangle

Part III:

Tape one 9”x 9” clear film overlays on top of the 2002 aerial photograph and tape one of the 9”x 9” clear film overlays on top of the 1979 aerial photograph. Tape one 11”x17” clear film overlay on top of each of the two Landsat 7 Satellite Images and on top of the 1:24,000 USGS topographic quadrangle.

1. Use the ultra fine black pen to mark four corner ticks on each map, photo, or image and write in a (any) corner what the image is, for example, “1979 Aerial Photographic,” “2003 Landsat 7 Satellite Image.”

2. Use the black pen. On the overlays on the seven images, trace any 5 streets or highways.

3. Use the brown pen. On the overlays on the seven images, locate any 10 houses and mark their location with a dot.

4. Use the purple pen. On the overlays on the seven images, locate any boats and mark the boats with a dot.

5. Use the orange pen. On the overlays on the seven images, trace the Gandy Bridge/causeway.

6. Use the blue pen. On the overlays on the seven images, trace the outline of Weedon Island.

7. Use the red pen. On the overlays on the seven images, outline an area of mangroves (must be the same area of mangroves on each image).

8. Use the green pen. On the overlays on the seven images, outline an area of seagrass (must be the same area of mangroves on each image).

9. What would you suggest about the information that you are able to visualize between the various maps, the 2002 and the 1979 aerial photographs, and the Landsat 7 satellite images:

which shows the greatest detail? _______________________

which shows the least detail? _______________________

Part IV:

The 2002 aerial photograph is a Natural Color (N/C) Image.

1. What does “natural color” mean?

____________________________________________________________

2. What does “black and white” mean?

____________________________________________________________

3. Which Landsat 7 TM satellite image approximates a Natural Color (NC) image?

____________________________________________________________

4. The other Landsat 7 TM Image approximates a color Infrared Image (CIR)
What does “color infrared” mean?

_________________________________________________________

5. Compare the Landsat 7 TM images, NC, and B&W aerial photographs. The following features are best represented in which of the four images.

  TM NC B/W
Vegetation looks most natural.
Vegetation most distinguishable from the land cover type.
Vegetation types most distinguishable from other vegetation types.
Wetlands show up best.
Agricultural fields show up best.
Urban areas show up best.
Sediment in the estuary shows up best.
Underwater features show up the best
