Skill 2:                  Scale Determination
Element 8:            Topographic Profile

Materials:
            1983/82   1:24,000 scale USGS Lewis Springs-Tombstone SE Topographic Quadrangle
             Ruler
            Graph Paper
            Sheet of white paper
            Magnifying glass
            Pencil  

Exercise:

           1.          Use 1983/82 1:24,000 scale USGS Lewis Springs-Tombstone SE Topographic Quadrangle.

           2.           Draw a line across the study site that goes through the number 1 (just outside of the west Boundary of the study site) and through the number 4 (just inside the east boundary of the study site). 

           3.          Use graph paper.  

           4.          Produce a topographic profile.                

                                x  axis         =         divide into one mile increments using scale from bottom of map

                                y axis        =        feet   (Use a vertical exaggeration of  2 times)        

            5.           Locate the San Pedro River where the profile crosses it.
