Exercise:
Note: This
exercise can be worked in groups of two with each person preparing an overlay or coloring
a NWI map section.
1. Use the 1985
Habitat 11"x 17" map
2. Use a clear film,
11"x 17", overlay
3. Tape clear film overlay on top of 1985
Habitat map. Tape top edge.
4. Use Green pen to mark corner ticks on the
overlay, one at each corner of the study site.
5. Trace the
Mono Lake shoreline in Green.
6. At the bottom of
the overlay (in green) draw a short horizontal
line
7. Remove the
1983 Shoreline overlay.
8. Use another
11"x 17" clear film overlay.
9. Tape the clear film overlay
on top of the 1999 Habitat map.
10.
Use Orange pen
to mark corner ticks on the overlay, one at each corner of the study site.
11. Trace the
Mono Lake shoreline in Orange.
12.
At the bottom of the overlay (in orange), draw a short horizontal line and
13. Remove
1999 Shoreline overlay.
14.
Tape the third clear film overlay over the 1:24,000
scale topographic map.
15.
Use Brown
pen to mark corner ticks on the overlay, one at each corner of the study site.
16. Draw a lakeshore that
approximates the current day shoreline as found in the Geographic Summary.
Hint:
Remember that the contour interval is not the same for
all four quadrants of the 1:24,000 topographic map.
17. Draw
a brown line ½ inch at the bottom of the
overlay and label it 2000
Shoreline.
18. Remove
the 2000 Shoreline overlay.
19. Tape
another clear film overlay over the 1:24,000 topographic map.
20.
Use Purple
pen to mark corner ticks on the overlay, one at each corner of the study site.
21. Draw a lakeshore that
approximates the highest shoreline ever recorded for Mono Lake, a found in the Table of
Mono Lake Level 1850-1998.
22. Draw a purple line ½ inch long at the bottom of the
overlay and label it Highest Recorded Shoreline.
23. Remove the Highest
Recorded Shoreline overlay.
24. Tape another clear film
overlay over the 1:24,000 scale topographic map.
25.
Use Red
pen to mark corner ticks on the overlay, one at each corner of the study
site.
26. Draw a lakeshore line that
will approximate the proposed stabilized shoreline that approximates the proposed
stabilized shoreline as found in the Geographic Summary, Lake Level Issue, 1994 to
present.
27. Draw a red line ½ inch long at the bottom of the overlay and label it Proposed Shoreline.
