Exercises:

Part I

  1. Using the 1:24,000 scale map and the 2005 aerial photograph locate:
    1. Cowles Bog
    2. I-94
    3. Dunes Creek
    4. Pratt Lake

  2. Using the 1:100,000 scale map and the 2005 aerial photograph locate:
    1. Cowles Bog
    2. I-94
    3. Dunes Creek
    4. Pratt Lake

  3. Using the satellite image and the 1:100,000 scale map locate on the satellite image:
    1. Indiana Dunes WETMAAP Study Site
    2. Cowles Bog
    3. I-94
    4. Dunes Creek
    5. Pratt Lake

  4. Using the 2007 satellite images, the 1:24,000 scale map, and the 2005 aerial photograph locate:
    1. Cowles Bog
    2. Steele Mill
    3. Little Calumet River East Arm
    4. areas north of the substation and steel mill

  5. What would you suggest about the information that you are able to visualize between the various maps, the 2005 aerial photograph, and the satellite image:

Part II

  1. Tape one of the 11" x 17" clear film overlays on top of the Landsat 7 Thematic Mapper image.

  2. Use the Black pen to make four marks; one at each corner ticks of the image.

  3. Using the 1:100,000 scale USGS Topographic Quadrangle and the Black pen , locate two points at least four inches apart.

Hint:It is best to identify and use cultural features, but if not enough are available, use two natural feature points that do not appear to have changed.
  4. Identify the exact same two features from the USGS Topographic Quadrangle on the 2007 Landsat 7 Satellite Image. Make a mark on the image for each location.

  5. Measure the distance between the two points on the 1:100,000 scale USGS Topographic Quadrangle with the ruler.

_________________ What is the distance in inches?

  6. Measure the distance between the same two points on 2007 Landsat 7 Satellite Image the with the ruler.

________________ What is the distance in inches?

  7. Using the calculator and "Scale Determination" section of the Reference Manual, determine the scale of the 2007 Landsat 7 Satellite Image.

_________________ What is the scale that you calculated?

Part III

The 2005 aerial photograph is a Natural Color (N/C) Image.

  1. What does “natural color” mean?

  2. Which Landsat 7 TM satellite image approximates a Natural Color (NC) image?

  3. What does “color infrared” mean?

  4. Which Landsat 7 TM satellite image approximates a Color Infrared (CIR) image?

  5. Compare the Landsat 7 TM images, NC, and B&W aerial photographs. The following features are best represented in which of the four images.

  CIR NC B/W
Vegetation looks most natural.
Vegetation most distinguishable from the land cover type.
Vegetation types most distinguishable from other vegetation types.
Wetlands show up best.
Agricultural fields show up best.
Urban areas show up best.
Sediment in the estuary shows up best.
Underwater features show up the best.
