Element 1: Introduce Scale of Map

Materials:

  1994 1:24,000 scale Lake Quitman-Cocodrie Topographic Quadrangle

            ruler 

Exercise:

1. Use 1:24,000 scale Lake Quitman-Cocodrie Topographic Quadrangle.

            2. Examine scale at bottom of page.

            3. Use ruler.

            4. Measure distance across study site from west to east. 

                        _________________ How many inches is the distance west to east? 

            5. Place the ruler over bar scale (bar scale measurement in feet). 

                        _________________ How many feet equal the measured map distance across the site? 

            6. Repeat measurements across the site from north to south. 

     _________________ How many inches is the distance north to south?

     _________________ How many feet equal the measured map distance across the site?
