Materials:
Colored pens
Drafting tape
(3) 11"x 17" clear film overlays
1983 11"x 17" Habitat map
1990 11"x 17" Habitat map
Shoreline Change Map 1852 - 1980
Exercise:
Note: This exercise can be worked in groups of two with each person preparing an overlay or coloring a NWI map section.
1. Use the 1983 Habitat 11"x 17" map
2. Use clear film 11"x 17" overlay
3. Tape clear film overlay on top pf 1983 Habitat map. Tape top edge.
4. Use BLACK pen to mark "corner ticks" on the overlay, one at each corner of the study site.
5. Trace the shoreline in BLACK (use a - - - - - line) for both the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.
6. At the bottom of the overlay (in black) draw a short horizontal line
(dashed - - - - -) and label beside it "1983 Shoreline."
7. Trace large pond at southern tip of the Cape in BLUE.
8. At the bottom of the overlay (in blue) draw a small circle and label beside it "Pond."
9. Remove the "1983 Shoreline" overlay.
10. Use a second 11"x 17" clear film overlay.
11. Tape the clear film overlay on top of the 1990 Habitat map.
12. Use the ORANGE pen.
13. Trace the shoreline in ORANGE for both the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.
14. At the bottom of the overlay (in orange), draw a short horizontal line and label beside it "1990 Shoreline".
15. Remove "1990 Shoreline" overlay.
16. Use third 11"x 17" overlay.
17. Tape clear film overlay on top of Shoreline Change Map 1852-1980.
18. Use BLACK pen to trace the Pamlico Sound shoreline on the overlay.
19. Use GREEN pen.
20. Trace the 1975 shoreline in GREEN.
21. At the bottom (in green) draw a short horizontal line and label it
"1975 Shoreline".
22. Use BROWN pen.
23. Trace 1946-47 shoreline in BROWN.
24. At the bottom (in brown) draw a short horizontal line and label it
"1946-47 Shoreline".
25. Use YELLOW pen.
26. Trace the 1917 shoreline in YELLOW.
27. At the bottom (in yellow) draw a short horizontal line and label it "1917 Shoreline".
28. Use PURPLE pen.
29. Trace 1872 shoreline in PURPLE.
30. At the bottom (in purple) draw a short horizontal line and label it "1872 Shoreline".
31. Use RED pen.
32. Trace the 1852 shoreline in RED.
33. At the bottom (in red) draw a short horizontal line and label it "1852 Shoreline".
